You know how contagious colds and flu viruses are. Just think of the last time someone in your house came home sniffling and sneezing and it went through the entire family. Down for the count. You can’t keep the viruses from getting in your house, but you can keep them from spreading like wildfire by making sure everyone gets in the habit of washing their hands.

Colds and flu are also spread from mucus so cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze by using your elbow. This helps from contaminating your hands and spreading the germs to other surfaces. Throw tissues away immediately after you use them. And, if someone in your household is sick, do not share any items like utensils with them. This can cut down on the risk of you getting the virus.

Clean Up, Clean Up, Everybody, Everywhere According to the CDC, cold and flu viruses can live for up to two hours on hard surfaces such as desks, doorknobs, and computers so cleaning surfaces is as important as cleaning your hands. Areas like the bathroom and kitchen should be disinfected often when someone in the house is sick. The toilet, sinks, kitchen counters, and light switches are all places where germs like to hang out. The cleaner you use should protect against different strains of bacteria and germs.

While there is no cure for the flu, you can get a vaccine to reduce your chances of contracting it, or reducing the symptoms if you do get it. You must get the vaccine every year as the previous one does not work for the current flu season. Anyone ages over 6 months is eligible for a flu shot, so speak with your doctor to find out if the vaccine is a good option for you. Unfortunately, there are no vaccines for the common cold.

Practicing good hygiene is the best way to avoid getting sick with the cold or flu. You can prevent getting these illnesses by taking care of yourself and if you do start to feel symptoms, treat them immediately.
